If emotion is information...

What are our emotions trying to tell us? Even when we believe our decisions are guided by logic and rational thinking...our ability to manage and understand our emotions plays a role.

A rare day off can be anxiety inducing...so much to do and so little time. How do we decide to use the time? We might want to set aside some of the time to rest and recreate... Will we go for a drive? Catch up on some reading? Go for a walk? Hang out with a friend? Spend some time day dreaming? Or we might feel the need to do some practical jobs like last weeks dishes?

We can focus on what we need to do ie washing, shopping, sorting, tidying...the things that enable us to function better on other days.

and/or

We can focus on what we want to do ie taking some time out from the hum drum of life, to reenergise, to restore some balance...to enhance our well being today.

Both what we need to do and what we want to do have merit. We are free to choose according to our values and how we are feeling at the time. What would the cost and benefit be if we take the time to notice, to understand and to reflect on what we are sensing? To consider what our gut is telling us? To make an informed decision according to our emotions?

Or do we allow ourselves to feel overwhelmed and give in to a past belief, rule or thought and not take responsibility for our own decision. Who is responsible for the consequence of that choice and who has to live with the outcome. We do!

We can just go with the flow, be led by others preferences or do what we think we should do. What is best for us? How do we know? Is there a right or wrong decision? Or is there a third option?

If we tap into our emotions, listen to our gut, trust our instincts then we can use all of that to help us make a decision that we are comfortable with.

Emotions help us to be true to ourselves. If we notice what we feel, understand what's causing us to feel that way then we can make informed decisions. We can take responsibility for healthy expression and we can choose options that we are ok with.

Next time you are feeling some anxiety about a decision why not tune into your gut, reflect on what might be driving your thinking and come up with an option that satisfies your felt sense.

If you're stuck?

Let's talk, listen and reflect together!
