Want? Need? Choose?
Decisions, decisions? What to wear, what to eat, what to say, what to do? Life is full of decisions and making ‘the right’ decision or at least a reasonably ‘good one’ is a constant in our lives.
One of life's necessities is food. Let’s hone in on decisions about what to eat because we all get hungry and we’ve all been to the shops to buy food. At the super market the vast array of products creates a barrage of choice. We vacillate between price, Australian made, Intolerances in diet, specific ingredients like the sugar content, palate preference which in a large family can potentially be very limiting and after all that we have several options for purchasing these items: self-serve, baskets only or good old fashioned customer service. And to top it all off, if you’re like me, you often pick the slowest option when you are invariably hoping to exit quickly. There is pressure, stress, anxiety, frustration and overall it can be quite tiring.
Yet we need to eat and we know that eating well improves our well-being, helps us to grow, to function well and to be healthier. We also know that allergies and food intolerances are absolutes and need to be acknowledged and adhered to. The fact is that we will keep on going back and repeating this routine weekly or even daily as we both want to and we need to eat. Despite many constraints we will continue to shop for food, whether we choose to purchase it online, have it delivered or shop in person. Whether it becomes a chore or not can depend on our attitude.
Next time you have the urge to eat and find that the fridge is near empty or the cupboard is bare, try not to focus on the drudgery but the necessity and even the adventure of hunting and gathering. If we see it as something that we choose to do rather than something we have to do then we can shift the weight of the task from a burden to something that simply needs to be done. This doesn't stop the barrage of choice or others from helping us but that's for another conversation.
