R U OK?
Thursday 14th September is R U OK? DAY... a national reminder that we've all got what it takes to ask, "are you ok?" and show our care for one another and demonstrate support for those struggling with life.
More than 3,000 Australians suicide each year. That's about 8 people every day.
You've got what it takes to look out for one another and support those who may be struggling with life. We can simply use our eyes, ears and mouths as resources.
You've got what it takes to navigate a conversation when someone says "no, I'm not ok" by following these four steps:
1. Ask R U OK? Be relaxed and find out how they are going?
2. Listen without judgement. Be curious and ask open questions.
3. Encourage Action. Find out how you can support them to manage the situation.
4. Check in. Stay in touch and be there for them as genuine care and concern can make a real difference.
We're looking out for each other by encouraging the importance of regular, meaningful conversations. And we are hoping that this national movement will give people the confidence to turn to each other and to talk about life's ups and downs.
Sometimes conversations are too big for friends and family and professional support is needed. If the answer is no then stay with them and encourage action by making contact with a trained professional for effective follow up. A suicide prevention service provider and counsellors like us who have been trained with Hope for Life (which is suicide prevention specific) can help.
Remember...this is a conversation that could change a life!
