Good vibes raise Mental Health Awareness

We may or may not be Royalist’s but it’s difficult not to feel some warmth toward Harry and Meghan. They generously and kindly connect with others in different cultures and situations. Together, they appear to be better, as they smile, hold hands and attune to one another and to whatever is going on at the time. In a seemingly relaxed and personable manner they carry out their extraordinary duties and show sheer delight in the ordinary too.

They particularly caught our attention when they engaged with OneWave, a local Bondi surfing community group, which works to raise awareness for Mental hearth and well being, in a fun and engaging way. Harry and Megan listened as group members shared their own stories and experiences with Mental health issues. They also offered some personal responses and Meghan contributed that she finds yoga helpful.

Harry shared his own personal story. How he shut down his emotions for 20 years after his own mother’s death. That he got back on track after acknowledging that he wasn’t coping. He exemplifies the benefit of expressing how we feel. It takes courage to speak about our uncomfortable feelings and to determine if we need to see a counsellor….and that’s what Harry said helped him.

He summed it all up by saying that “it is ok to not be ok”. Everyone of us struggles and everyone experiences suffering of some sort or other. We cannot change what has happened but we can change our response to it. We don’t need to stay stuck but we do need to acknowledge our issues and to seek help.

The Invictus Games celebrate how broken bodies, minds and lives, which have seemingly lost the strength they once had, can be resilient in the face of their struggle. They can rise above their pain and suffering, take courage to achieve the impossible and through their display of courage give hope to all who suffer.

May we be encouraged to be open, to genuinely share how we feel and to enquire about how others feel too. Doing this without judgement and without needing to fix anything yet with honesty and empathy is the good vibe we all need.
