Mental Health and Changing Time

If you travel then you have probably experienced jet lag…that feeling of uncertainty, of not knowing what day it is or what time it is and whether it is an ok time to eat or to sleep. Even just travelling from Perth in the last couple of weeks you would have experienced 4 different time zones as daylight savings kicked in. It effects our equilibrium and it can effect our physical and mental health.

This temporary state of misalignment upsets the body’s rhythms. It can effect our ability to sleep, to think clearly and to function as well as we might. It’s all about our hormones, our stress levels and our mood. We all need time to adjust to daylight savings time, so maybe we need to go easy on our partners, our kids, our colleagues and any other being that comes across our path.

And given that this is Mental Health Awareness week, here are ten suggestions to help protect our Mental Health :

  1. Disconnect to reconnect…tune into those around us

  2. Live in the present…reduce stress and be grateful for what is in front of us

  3. Stay active…to reduce stress, anxiety and depression

  4. Get an early night…sleep protects our mental health

  5. Keep learning…it exercises our brain and helps us focus

  6. Get to know your neighbours…reduce isolation

  7. Eat well…limit our unhealthy intake

  8. Get outdoors…nature has a positive effect

  9. Be kind…stronger connections boost happiness

  10. Seek help…take action, talk and get appropriate support

And if you’re stuck?
