What do you value?
Research shows that understanding our values can determine satisfaction in our work, our relationships and leisure activities. This is not about goal setting but about our chosen or desired lifestyle and living by our values. Why is it important to reflect on our values?
-
Values are beliefs that influence our behaviour and decision making.
-
Values provide motivation and inspiration.
-
Values guide our actions.
-
Values give life meaning.
For example…if telling the truth is a value then we will be truthful when dealing with others. There are several questions that can help us to evaluate what our values are. We think that these are worth reflecting on…
Q What do you want your life to be about?
Q What matters most to you?
Q What do you want to do with your time?
Q What would you like to be remembered for by the people that you love?
We’d encourage you to choose a few values that resonate with who you are. Values have significant character strengths that help us to recognise our uniqueness and to understand why something matters to us. After we have chosen our values we need to consider what enables us to live by them and what might get in the way of us doing this?
Committed action will enable us to live in line with our values. The challenge is to live according to our values more effectively which will enable us to live a more satisfied life.
