Fright or Delight?
The doorbell rings…what do we think?
An unknown caller rings our number…what do we feel?
An unmarked letter arrives…what do we do?
There may be cause for us to be concerned but more often than not there is nothing but an underlying expectation that this is something to get worried about. And we do. We think about it negatively, we feel like withdrawing and we react by not responding.
We are wired to protect ourselves from possible threat of harm. This is useful if there actually is a reason for us to be concerned. So just in case something untoward might happen or simply because we cannot be bothered we ignore, delay or fob off the responsibility to someone else.
If we are afraid, anxious or stressed by any of these fairly normal events then we could be living with an expectation of fright. FEAR which can be false expectations appearing real. Depending on our history and past experience we might have genuine heightened sensitivity. But generally we don’t need to be on guard and to adopt a fright stance for these everyday occurrences.
What would happen if we viewed these interruptions as reasonable? If we chose to expect the unexpected and to be curious about the unknown. What if we choose to be inquisitive about the incidents of life and imagine delight rather than fright? By adopting a more calm, relaxed and grounded stance we can save some energy for things that are real and life giving.
May we all look for and choose to think, feel and do the things that bring us and everyone around us more delight.
