Make Way - For Realisation

In order to have a good enough relationship we need to articulate and action what makes this possible. That even though we bring our own set of problems, have different perspectives and our own strengths and limitations, both partners undeniably gain when they are understood, appreciated and not judged. This creates common ground. The realisation that we both matter and are worthy of equal standing, that we expect to be treated the same, have the same rights and opportunities to flourish needs to be realised over and over again.

We need to become fully aware of what this means for us…what we are craving from our relationship?

We also need to consider what is required of us…what the other person might be craving from a relationship with us?

To achieve this desire, what each partner needs and wants, we need to cater for both perspectives. This requires awareness (intentionality) and application (actioning). After all, one definition of love is that ‘love equals intent plus action’. If I say that I love you, care deeply for you, then I will consider you and kindly act accordingly. When I behave otherwise, I will rectify this. I will own my poor behaviour and kindly respond to your hurt. A good enough relationship includes the realisation that we can and that we need to change and as a result of this then together we can thrive.

If our ego, our pride, our stubborn ways are stopping us from relating kindly then we need to address this. If low self esteem, lack of confidence or meek ways are preventing us from expecting kindness then we need to address this. This is what it takes to be a good enough partner. The realisation that we each need to be willing and open to growing and changing along with our partner for our relationships sake. We are evolving and so too can our relationship. Our aim is not perfection for we are human beings with flaws. Our goal is to be the better version of ourselves, for our sake, our partners sake and for our good enough relationships sake.

Thankfully, most people agree that all folk need to be treated well. We matter and we are deserving of love. With hope, humility and humour we can traverse life together. We can achieve a good enough relationship that mostly satisfies our needs, our partners, our friends needs and ultimately impacts our communities, the social fabric of our world, for common good.
